Missing Peace?

We encourage you to visit us at lcchome.net

When we find ourselves going through uncertain or difficult times, we can become weary, frustrated and disoriented.  We can begin to "lose our bearings" so to speak...not sure which direction to go or even what the destination should be.  When we experience this disorientation, one of the first symptoms is a loss of peace.

We may stay awake, staring at the ceiling thinking of all that needs to be done.  We may begin to experience stomach aches due to the stress of our situations.  We can begin to lose our patience and self-control with those closest to us-our family and dearest friends being exposed to our anger or negativity.

But what can we do about it?  There's only so much money we can earn, problems we can solve, phone calls we can return and hours in a day.  Our children don't become perfect citizens over night.   We can't resolve marriage problems in a day.  And despite the best intentions of our bosses, there is no perfect work environment...and there never will be.

So, I submit to you that often the answer is not a change in circumstances, but a change in perspective.   Here are three tips on regaining and maintaining peace in your life:

  1. Commit Your Life to God.  There is no more crucial step to peace in life than to surrender control of your life over to God.  His love is unconditional and His plans are good for us...but God will not chain you to His will.  If we stay in charge, make all of our own rules and determine our own course we are destined for many regrets.  But if we give Him our hearts and our futures, He will "make us lie down in green pastures and lead us beside quiet waters" (Psalm 23).

  2. Focus Your Mind on the Positives.  We need to train our minds to think clearly, positively and rationally (Philippians 4:8).  Often we are stressed out about things that never even occur!  We should strive to have disciplined minds that do not ignore real problems, but also do not ignore real blessings!   There are more important things in life than possessions, personal accomplishments and prestige.  Faith.   Family.  Love.  Charity.  These are the hallmarks of a truly significant life.

  3. Remember:  Nothing is Impossible with God!  There is a Christian cartoon song entitled, "God is Bigger than the Boogey Man!"...and He is!  Whatever the challenge.  Whatever the obstacle.   God is able to see you through (Philippians 4:13).  It may not be exactly as you would have planned it...but you will make it.  God has come through for you before...He will do it again!

So, if today you are missing peace...don't look first for a new job, a new spouse, or a new pair of shoes.   Look first for a new perspective.  And not just a good perspective, but a God-perspective.   If you do, I guarantee you that your peace will be missing no longer.
